Frequently Asked Questions

What services can I expect to be billed for?

Riverside Health Care billing services encompass a range of areas, including hospital/clinical services, long-term care, and community-based programs. Long-term care billing may include resident billing and charges for optional services such as cable television.

Community services invoices may cover programs like Meals on Wheels, home care services, or transportation assistance.

If you have a valid Ontario Health Card, OHIP will pay for most of the health care services you receive during hospital/clinical related visits, however, some services are not covered by OHIP and are the responsibility of the patient, these may include:

  • Ambulance services and medical transfers
  • Preferred accommodation ( private or semi-private rooms)
  • Assistive devices – such as crutches, canes, splints, casts, gel wraps
  • Certain procedures and implants
  • Equipment Rentals ( telephone and television)

*Note: If you have third party insurance, your insurance plan may cover the costs of some of these services.

When do I have to pay my bill?

Your bill is due upon receipt.

Invoices/statement reminders are sent out every 30 days. At 90 days, you will receive a final invoice.

If the account remains unpaid 30 days after the final invoice, the account is subject to collections.

Why do I pay for ambulance services?

Under provincial legislation, Ontario residents with a valid Ontario Health Card receiving ambulance transportation deemed medically necessary are charged a co-payment of $45 unless covered by one of the Special Exemption categories listed below:

  • the person receives benefits under the Ontario Works Act, the Ontario Disability Support Program Act, or the Family Benefits Act
  • the person receives provincial social assistance (general welfare assistance or family benefits)

(Proof of either of the above exemptions must be provided to the Riverside Health Care Finance Department)

Other exemptions may include:

  • transfers to a health facility to another for insured, medically necessary treatment
  • the person is enrolled in the Ministry’s Home Care Program
  • the person is living in facilities licensed or approved by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care

When an Ontario resident with a valid health card is transported within the province by ambulance, and the receiving hospital physician or designate deems the use of an ambulance medically unnecessary, the ambulance transportation is not insured under the Ontario Health Insurance Act and the patient will be charged a $240 fee.

When an Ontario resident without a valid health card, or a non-resident is transported within Ontario by ambulance, the patient must pay the $240. Only upon providing proof of a valid Ontario Health Card will the bill be reduced to the $45 ambulance co-payment.

Why were my services billed to OHIP rejected?

Billing rejected by the Ontario Ministry of Health is typically due to an incorrect health card number or version code. If we are unable to contact you to update the information, you will be billed directly.

If your health card information is expired or invalid, please contact Service Ontario or visit a local office. Once your health card is validated, please call our Finance team at (807) 274-4805 to share your updated health card information.

Please note that OHIP rejections must be rectified within 90 days of service or the Ministry will not allow processing of the claim and you will remain responsible for payment.

What if I have no health coverage?

If you do not have Ontario (OHIP) or other Canadian provincial or federal health insurance, you are required to pay for all services you receive. On arrival to any hospital, you must inform the registration clerk you do not have health coverage. In some cases, you may be expected to provide a deposit for services.

What if I am an International Patient?

If you are a non-resident of Canada, you are considered an international patient. International patients are not covered by OHIP and are expected to pay for all services they receive.

When you arrive, you must inform the registration clerk you are an international patient without coverage. You may be expected to provide a deposit for your care and/or make full payment upon departure. If you arrived to hospital via ambulance, you are also responsible for the ambulance service charge of $240 for each ambulance service rendered.

If you have third-party insurance coverage, please contact your insurance company for coverage inquiries.

What if I have Third-Party Insurance?

If you have third-party insurance coverage, please contact your insurance company for coverage inquires. You will likely be expected to pay your invoice and then seek reimbursement from your insurance company.

What if I am receiving WSIB Benefits?

If you were injured at work and your treatment is related to your work injury, your coverage will vary. To get more information about your WSIB coverage and making a claim, please visit WSIB Ontario or the relevant provincial equivalent.

If you are treated in the Emergency Department for a work-related injury and intend to file a claim with WSIB, you must inform your health care team that this was a work-related injury and complete the WSIB eForm 6. Your employer should also complete the WSIB eForm 7.

What If My Invoice Was Sent Back To Riverside As Returned Mail?

We attempt to make calls on returned mail to obtain the correct address. If we are unable to contact you due to incorrect information on file, your invoice may be sent to our collection agency.
