Full Time Engineer IV

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience as an operating (stationary) engineer;
  • 4th class operating engineer certification preferred;
  • Completion of High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of working at heights training.
  • Ability to understand and apply procedures for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of stationary engines, allied systems and auxiliary equipment, able to determine causes of malfunction and to take appropriate corrective action;
  • Ability to quickly and accurately calculate items such as latent heat, thermal units or combustion efficiency;
  • Ability to read and analyze drawings. Ability to determine relationships in drawings ranging from simple elevations and plan views to isometric scale drawings and to relate this information to operational equipment;
  • Form perception to visually compare parts for wear, to repair or replace such things as malfunctioning valves;
  • High degree of accuracy in computing data such as fuel mixtures or pollutant emissions;
  • High degree of manual dexterity to coordinate fine movements, and make rapid and accurate adjustments or repairs to equipment;
  • Must be able to undertake light to medium physical effort including carrying tools and parts, and climbing, stairs, and ladders.
  • Ability to detect malfunctions in equipment, read gauges charts, and judge distances
  • Dependable, competent and continued ability to carry out responsibilities;
  • Physically capable of performing the essential duties of the job.
  • Incumbent will occasionally be exposed to disagreeable working conditions such as extremes of heat and cold, noise, vibration, working at heights, and working in awkward positions for prolonged periods of time while performing critical repairs.

BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. To ensure the efficient operation and maintenance of the steam plant and auxiliary equipment and provision of security services.

  2. Assist with general care and upkeep throughout the facility.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  1. Fire boilers and control generation of continuous supply of steam for heating hospital buildings, for supplying power to machinery and auxiliary equipment and for laundries and sterilizing equipment.

  2. Prepare boilers for inspections in accordance with regulations.

  3. Responsible to monitor the overall daily, weekly and annual maintenance of all boilers and ventilation systems and provide instruction to other team members.

  4. Maintain records in accordance with applicable legislation and regulations and hospital policies.

  5. Responsible for instructing and evaluating boiler feed water test, chemical additives, boiler reset instructions and daily tasks of maintaining boilers.

  6. Performs general maintenance duties at the direction of the immediate supervisor.

  7. Operate, maintain, and repair stationary, mechanical and electrical equipment.

  8. Provide security services to prevent fire, theft, vandalism, illegal entry and bodily harm as well as ensure that the facility is locked down during rounds.

  9. Participate in fire drills, evacuation exercises, internal and external disaster and civil program exercises.

  10. Participate in the Department's Quality Management and Maintenance Care programs.

  11. Maintain and check daily all alarms and troubles on Ventilation / Heating Control Systems.

  12. Carry out all work assignments safely and be knowledgeable of and in compliance with relevant regulations, policies and procedures (i.e. Occupational Health and Safety Act).

  13. Perform all duties as designated by immediate supervisor or Director of Capital Planning and Engineering and Environmental Services.

HOURS OF WORK:

This is a full time position with a rotating schedule, the incumbent will be required to work evenings, weekends, and be on call.
