Casual Repairman

The Maintenance department has an opening for a Casual Repairman at La Verendrye General Hospital. The successful candidate must be able to meet the normal requirements of the job and possess the following qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS NECESSARY:

  • Trade certificate or Grade 12 with equivalent knowledge, skill, abilities and experiences;
  • Valid class G driver’s license and safe driving record;
  • Experience in institutional maintenance an asset;
  • Effective written and oral communication skills;
  • Effective interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations of measuring, estimating, costing and testing;
  • Ability to use hand and power tools, welding, brazing, soldering equipment, and various testing devices;
  • Demonstrated ability to apply the procedures and principles of mechanical, electrical,
  • plastering, painting, plumbing, construction repair and maintenance within the health care setting;
  • Ability to work within limits and standards set by procedures, policies, legislation, and specifications;
  • Ability to work in a team and independently with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to follow blueprints and schematics;
  • Understands and maintains confidentiality;
  • Familiar with Occupational Health & Safety Workers’ rights and responsibilities;
  • Dependable, competent and continued ability to carry out responsibilities;
  • Physically capable of performing the essential duties of the position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Spatial perception to visualize form drawings, sequence of parts assembly and relative positions of components;
  • Capacity to work where exposed to physical hazards such as noise, moving parts, and equipment heights, confined spaces, chemical odours, dust, and adverse weather and environmental conditions such as heat, humidity, and cold;
  • Possess eye-hand-finger coordination and manual dexterity to handle parts, tools, and operate equipment in order to dismantle, clean, repair, assemble, adjust, and perform functional tests;
  • Form perception to make visual comparisons in shape and general conditions when assessing parts wear or defects;
  • Ability to climb and balance on ladders and scaffolds, stop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, handle, finger, and feel;
  • Visual ability to differentiate between colours and undertake close inspection of objects;
  • Ability to work rapidly under emergency conditions;
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy work requiring the lifting of items 20-50 pounds on a regular basis and upwards of 100 pounds on occasion;
  • Good hearing ability in order to recognize sounds that indicate equipment malfunctioning, emergency sirens, paging, and warning devices.

BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist the Director of Facilities, Capital Planning & Engineering and the Manager of Engineering & Environmental Services in the efficient operation and maintenance of equipment/facilities and provision of security services.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Estimate quantities of materials and prepares requisitions.
  • Assist in construction, repairs and building maintenance.
  • Operates and maintains stationary, mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Participate in fire drills, evacuation exercises, internal and external disaster and civil program exercises.
  • Provide safekeeping activities to prevent fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry.
  • Inspects, installs, repairs, and replaces plumbing, electrical service and structural facilities.
  • Tests and treats boiler feed-water as required.
  • Fires boilers and controls generation of continuous supply of steam for heating hospital building and supplying power to equipment.
  • Offer assistance and/or instruction to co-workers.
  • Maintain grounds and disposes of waste.
  • Perform other general maintenance as required.
  • Participate in the departments Quality Management Program.
  • Carry out all work assignments safely and be knowledgeable of and in compliance with relevant regulations, policies, and procedure. (i.e., Occupational Health & Safety Act)
  • Performs other such duties or responsibilities that may be delegated by the immediate Supervisor or the Director of Facilities, Capital Planning & Engineering.
