Director, Therapeutic Services

The Pharmacy Department has an opening for a Pharmacy Assistant at La Verendrye General Hospital. The successful candidate must be able to meet the normal requirements of the job and possess the following qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS NECESSARY:

Education equivalent to the former designation of Certified Pharmacy

Technician, or a combination of education and pharmacy assistant experience relevant to the responsibilities and duties of this position.

Possess Delegation of Dispensing and Compounding status, or successful in achieving

delegation status prior to completion of probationary period

Experience in computer processing, MS Office experience an asset

Efficient keyboarding skills

General office skills, and pharmacy related procedures

Excellent written and oral communication skills, including telephone etiquette

Ability to work independently as well as in a team

Effective interpersonal skills

Responsible, co-operative, versatile and takes initiative

Dependable with an excellent attendance record

Competent and continued ability to carry out responsibilities

Physically capable of performing the essential duties of the job.

Familiar with Occupational Health & Safety Workers’ rights and responsibilities

BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Under the general direction and guidance of the Pharmacist fills prescriptions and wards stock medications and prepares sterile and non-sterile prefabricated medications, IV additives such as oncology medications and total parenteral nutrition preparations.
  •  In the absence of the Pharmacist, have responsibility for the operation of the Pharmacy Department as outlined in the policies relating to “Delegation of Dispensing and Compounding”.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

 

  •  Dispense individual patient prescriptions and ward stock medications.
  •  Manufacture and package antiseptic solutions and other external use preparations as required by the wards including calculation of ingredients when required.
  •  Receive and record messages when the pharmacist is out of the department and accurately relay message information to the pharmacist on his/her return.
  •  Order and receive pharmaceuticals and other supplies and maintain a computerized inventory.
  •  Preparation of IV’s such as TPN and oncology medications.
  •  Process and file all invoices and packing slips having entered all necessary data into the computer inventory.
  •  Fill pharmacy shelves, being careful to rotate stock and check expiry dates.
  •  Process expired pharmaceuticals, packaging all returnable items for shipping.
  •  Process returns from the wards by entering data into the computer inventory and returning usable drugs to the pharmacy inventory under the supervision of the Pharmacist.
  •  Update the Disaster Plan supplies which are kept in the IV room and in Materials Management Department.
  •  Update night cupboard supplies to ensure these are complete and contain no expired drugs.
  •  Under the direction of the Pharmacist, assist in the issuing and the review of narcotic and controlled drug preparation and maintenance of a perpetual inventory record of these medications.
  •  Update order sheets for the wards where appropriate.
  •  Maintain dispensing records for statistical and quality control programs
  •  Assist in maintaining the department in a neat orderly condition.
  •  Compounding of topical mixtures, injectable and oral mixtures, including calculations of ingredients when required.
  •  Responsible for opening and closing the pharmacy department and operation of the alarm system.
  •  Performs all other clerical duties necessary to organize and manage office procedures. (Photocopying, errands, ordering and maintaining supplies, sorting of mail etc.)
  •  Answer the telephones and takes messages, ensures efficient distribution of such
  •  Maintains filing for these services as well as purging of files and documentation required for shredding schedule.
  •  Design and produce pamphlets, posters, displays and ads for promotional purposes for the above services.
  •  Minute taking for meetings in departments as assigned
  •  Such other duties as may be designated from time to time by the Director, Therapeutic Services

 

QUALITY IMPROVEMENT / RISK MANAGEMENT

 

  •  Participate in the department's quality improvement activities.
  •  Maintain workload measurements records in compliance with MIS guidelines.
  •  Carry out all work assignments safely and be knowledgeable of and in compliance with relevant regulations, policies and procedures. (ie. Occupational Health and Safety Act)

 

CURRENT ASSIGNMENT:

 This position may be required to work days, nights, evenings and weekends.
