Full-Time Physiotherapy Assistant

DEPARTMENT/SERVICE AREA:

REPORTS TO (Title):

Manager, Therapeutic Services

The Therapeutic Services department has one opening for a Full-Time Physiotherapy Assistant at La Verendrye General Hospital. The successful candidate must be able to meet the normal requirements of the job and possess the following qualifications:

QUALITIES NECESSARY:

 

  • Graduate of a recognized physiotherapy assistant program at the post-secondary level (or graduate of a comparable post-secondary health care program);
  • Previous experience working directly with clients in a health care facility;
  • Knowledge in the field of gerontology;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Proficient computer skills;
  • Current CPR certification;
  • Excellent multi-tasking skills and the ability to work well under pressure;
  • Experience with electronic documentation;
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality;
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively independently, within a team, with front line personnel, and management;
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written orders;
  • Physically capable of performing the essential duties of the job.

 

BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Functioning as part of the interdisciplinary health care team to assist in meeting basic needs of patients in accordance with the policies, procedures, and standards of Riverside Health Care Facilities.
  2. Carry out all work assignments safely and be knowledgeable or in compliance with relevant regulations, policies and procedures.
  3. Seek assistance and guidance when necessary, observing patient’s needs and self-limitations.
  4. Support corporate rehab quality improvement initiatives.
  5. Exercise behaviour consistent with Riverside Health Care’s Code of Conduct.
  6. Demonstrates Riverside Health Care’s Core Values: Progressive, Integrity, Caring, and Accountable.
  7. Responsible for the provision of treatment programs that have been developed and are supervised by a qualified physiotherapist, as directed by professional practice guidelines.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES: 

 

  1. Implements the components of the treatment plan as directed by the physiotherapist, including: mobility, transfers, cognitive/perceptual/remedial activities, communication skills, recreational activities, modalities and exercise programs.
  2. Participates in the provision of ongoing education of clients, family members and other hospital staff.
  3. Attends, whenever practical, family conferences, reports and multidiscipline meetings to maintain communication and consistency of care.
  4. Reports observations of patient/client's performance and response to services to the physiotherapist. Report changes in health status to the physiotherapist and/or Nursing.
  5. Communicates with members of the rehabilitation team regarding treatment programs and client progress. Documentation will include charting and flow sheets.
  6. Recognizes risk factors, contraindication and precautions related to patient exercise and rehabilitation programs.
  7. Measures patients’ range-of-joint motion, body parts, and vital signs to determine the effects of treatment or for patient evaluations.
  8. Trains patients in the use of orthopedic braces, prostheses, and supportive/assistive devices (canes, walkers).
  9. Assists in transporting patients to and from treatment areas, lifting and transferring them according to positioning requirements.
  10. Prepares treatment areas and equipment for use by physiotherapists and check and store equipment after treatment.
  11. Participates in the department’s Quality Improvement Program.
  12. Participates in committee work related to the rehabilitation team and/or organization.
  13. Maintains necessary workload measurement.
  14. Perform clerical duties such as taking inventory, ordering supplies, answering the telephone, taking messages, scheduling outpatients, and managing the patient wait list.
  15. Demonstrates commitment to continuing education.
  16. Any other such duties as may be delegated.

Responsible to the Manager of Therapeutic Services.
