The western portion of the Rainy River District, bounded by the Town of Rainy River in the west and Fort Frances in the east, is an attractive area located on the shores of Rainy River on the Canada-Us Border.

The population of the area is approximately 20,000 over a total area of 4.7 million acres. The major industry in the area is logging and pulp/paper production. The second most significant industry is tourism, particularly during the summer months. The population swells with campers, boaters, fishermen and other holiday-makers from across the country and the United States. In outlying areas, farming remains the main occupation of most residents.
